What?

The I Matter curriculum is for all preschool though kindergarten children because life challenges all of us, but it was especially developed for children who have experienced early trauma. It is meant to fit snuggly and complement standard academic curriculum. In fact, language, math and science and the arts (visual, music and movement/dance) are the vehicles or context used to teach skills associated with:

  • Academic success such as working memory, time management, focus and attention

  • Personal success such as self-regulation, emotional Intelligence and critical thinking, and

  • Happiness and resourcefulness such as skills related to resilience, creativity, problem solving, gratitude and empathy

literature?

The center of the curriculum is often a well known children’s book. Many programs seek to introduce new literature to children, I Matter seeks to use the familiarity of exceptional literature to be the touch stone and gateway to success skills. There are many reasons why this is a great strategy for prosocial learning for all children but especially for those who have experienced early trauma.

Generalization: Literature that has passed the test of time can be found everywhere, in libraries, in most homes, in classrooms. This means that as children learn skills such as self monitoring and control, finding the books being used in I Matter will remind them of the skills and lessons learned. As children mature into adolescence and adulthood, they will find and remember the I Matter experiences.

In summary, finding these books in their environment will aide in recall and will hopefully support generalization of content and skills.
