You decided to be an educator to help shape the cognitive and social-emotional life of every child assigned to your classroom. Research has shown that a children need just one adult to make a difference in their lives, in other words, a miracle worker. Each child came to you with a full range of abilities, skills and attitudes.
You expected differences in:
Learning preferences and styles
Language(s)
Family, and community values
Physical and emotional development
Prior classroom experiences and personal attitudes about teachers, self and school
Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs)
Next you considered the number of students and the range of possible variations as you planned your differentiation strategy.
Your school may or may not have had a set curriculum; teacher support system; senior experienced colleagues; a well stocked library and technical resources; support programs for parents/caregivers; ethical leadership; clear mission and vision; horizontal and vertical connection to other schools and their resources; an integrated school district and superintendent that advocated a culture of mutual respect.
